The Open Office Writer application has become one of the most popular open source word processing applications used throughout the world. One of the more popular attributes of the Writer application is its ability to load and save documents in a wide variety of formats that are compatible with many of the commercially produced word processing programs on the market such as Microsoft Word. A common task that arises for Open Office Writer users is configuring the options in the program for loading and saving documents.

Configuring General Load/Save Options in Open Office Writer

Step 1 – Open Writer by double clicking the Open Office icon on your computer’s desktop or by selecting from the System menu or tray and selecting the “Writer” menu option on the primary panel that opens.

Step 2 – Select the “Tools” and “Options” menu options from the file menu of Open Office Writer.

Step 3 – Single click the “+” symbol that is located to the left of the “Load/Save” menu label.

Open Office Writer

Step 4 – Click the “General” menu label located just beneath the “Load/Save” menu on the expanded options after completing Step 3.

Step 5 – Enter the applicable/desired data to be included with new documents created or modified in the Open Office Writer application.

Configuring VBA Properties in Open Office Writer

Step 1 – Single click the “VBA Properties” menu label located beneath “Load/Save” in the “Options” menu in Writer.

Step 2 – Determine if you want to keep macros that are contained in MS Word documents that you open in Open Office Writer. You can select “Save original Basic code” in order to preserve the macros utility when saving the document in MS Word format. Alternatively, you can choose “Load Basic code to Edit” in order to save the code in native Writer format but it will not be preserved if you then save the work in MS Word format.

Configuring Microsoft Office Document Options in Writer

Step 1 – In the “Options,” “Load/Save” menu select the “Microsoft Office” option.

Step 2 – In the subsequent dialogue box select the checkbox to “Convert Microsoft OLE Objects into corresponding Open Office OLE Objects” when a Microsoft Word documents is loaded into Writer.

Objective-C is commonly known as the only approved development language for use in creating applications for deployment to Apple’s iPad and iPhone. At a higher level, the Objective-C language is an object-oriented that incorporates a Smalltalk-based messaging capability to ANSI C. The Objective-C language is used in the Apple Cocoa API and requires the Xcode integrated development environment (IDE) to create, build, and deploy projects.

Objective-C Language Syntax

Objective-c is a superset of the ANSI C programming language and the Apple produced compiler deployed with the Xcode IDE can compile any program written in strict ANSI C in addition to those written in Objective-C. The object syntax used in the language is based on the mechanisms defined in the Smalltalk programming language. All other programming syntax used in the language is the same as that used in ANSI C.

Objective-C Messaging

Objective-C uses an object-oriented programming model that uses the message passing found in Small talk between instances of class objects. In order to invoke a method in the language, a message is sent unlike the style of object method use in the C++ language. When the Objective-C message is sent at runtime, it is resolved to a C method and passes the message to the receiving object instance but does not perform type checking. An example of the difference in the syntax in both languages:

Objective-C Syntax:

[myObject methodName: argument1];

C++ Syntax:

myObject->methodName(argument1);

obj->method(argument);

A drawback to the methodology used in Objective-C language as compared to C++ is that it will by the nature of permitting runtime binding be slower than C++ which uses compile-time binding whenever possible. Objective-C also does not require an object be defined when the application is compiled permitting dynamic binding.

Differences Between C++ and Objective-C

A common question that arises amongst developers is understanding the differences in how C++ and Objective-C extend ANSI C. Each language takes a different approach to extending ANSI C. Objective-C does not try to add the large number of capabilities to ANSI like C++ does, instead Objective-C only works to extend the language by adding object orientated programming to existing C syntax. Objective-C also adds reflective capabilities at runtime when object instances are queried by messages. C++ on the other hand, can not do the same runtime reflective queries without the use of external libraries. C++ is also more heavily geared to relying on decisions made when programming code is compiled vice the Objective-C methodology of making runtime decisions.

The iPhone has become one of the most popular smart phones used in the market since the 2G iPhone release on June 29th, 2007. The 3G version of the iPhone was released on July 11th, 2008, the 3GS in 2009, and the 4G should be released in 2010/2011. A common need that arises for developers when getting started with iPhone application development is creating their first project in the Xode development environment.s

Iphone Application Development

The iPhone and iPad apps require you to use the Objective-C programming language in order to deploy software to the platforms. Objective-C is an object orientated language based on ANSI C. Objective-C provides predefined programming syntax for class and method definitions as well as allows you to dynamically extend existing programming language classes. Objective-C supports traditional object orientated language ideals such as polymorphism, inheritance, and encapsulation. In order to create an application to run on the iPhone or iPad operating system, you will need to use, Xcode, which is the integrated development environment (IDE) that Apple produces for app development. The IDE will also support development of command line and Cocoa applications.

How to Create an iPhone Application Project

Step 1 – Open the Xcode IDE by selecting the application located in the “Developer/Applications” folder on your MAC. At the time of this writing, the Xcode IDE is not available for use on a computer running the Windows operating system.

Step 2 – Create a new project by selecting the “File” and “New Project” menu options from the IDE file menu.

Step 3 – Choose the “Window-Based” application menu option and ensure the “iPhone” is selected in the product pop-up menu.

Step 4 – Select the “Choose” menu button and select a location on the local drive to store your project.

Step 5 – Enter a name for the project followed by the “Save” menu button.

Step 6 – Select the “Build and Go” menu button in the Xcode menu bar or alternatively select the “Build” and “Build and Go” menu buttons from the IDE file menu. You will then see the iPhone simulator launch and display a blank, white screen.

That’s all there is to making a stubbed out project in the Xcode IDE. We’ll get some more information posted to take you from new project creation to producing an iPhone app equivalent of “Hello World” in our next article related to iPhone/iPad application development.

Open Office Writer is the most popular open source word processing program on the market. The Writer application is capable of conducting the same basic and advanced functions that are found in Microsoft Word and Wordperfect. The Writer program can be run on any computer which has an operating system that supports Java technologies to include Mac OS X, Windows, and Unix. Writer documents are able to support embedded tables, columns, spreadsheets, objects, and pictures as well as advanced document formatting. A common task for new users of Open Office Writer is creating a new document.

Creating a New Document from the File Menu

Creating a new document in Open Office Writer is pretty straight forward. The following are the steps to follow to create a new document from the file menu in Writer:

Step 1 – Open the Open Office program interface by double clicking the program icon located on your computer’s desktop or from the system menu.

Step 2 – Single click the “Writer” icon on the subsequent menu listing the various Open Office applications.

Step 3 – Select the “File,” “New,” and “Text Document” menu options from the file menu of the application.

Step 3a – Alternatively, you can choose “File,” “New,” and “XML Document” or “HTML Document” depending on what type of product you need to create.

Creating a New Document from the Command Line in Open Office

Another method that is primarily used by power users is to create new documents through the command line interface of the computer’s operating system. If you need to create a new document using this method conduct the following actions:

Step 1 – Open the command console on your computer. On a Windows computer, select the “Start” menu and enter “command” in the search text field followed by the “Enter” key.

Step 2 – Enter “swriter” or “Soffice -writer” at the command prompt followed by the “Enter” key on your computer.

Step 3 – Add additional command line options to open writer to include “-minimized” to open Writer in a minimized state or “-norestore” to open the application without displaying application restoration options following a failure of the application.

Step 4 – View additional command line configuration options for Writer by entering “swriter -help” followed by the “enter” key on your computer’s console.

Open Office is one of the most popular open software office software application suites on the market. Since the software package uses Java in order to support multiple operating systems, it can have the appearance of running slow on older builds of various operating systems on computers which do not have a lot of computer RAM installed. In order to help Open Office load faster, the Open Office Quick Starter was developed in order to preload many of the application support files or DLL files on a Windows computer in order to shorten the startup time of the application. In Open Office 3, the Quick Starter is enabled by default.

How to Use the Open Office Quickstarter Program Icon?

The Open Office Quickstarter is loaded in the Windows application tray if you are using a computer running the Windows Operating System. It may or may not be used on your computer’s operating system if you use an alternative OS on your computer. In order to access the Quickstarter menu on a Windows box, you simply right click the Open Office icon in your computers application tray (normally located at the bottom of your computer screen next to the visual computer clock). From the Quickstarter menu, you can then open the “Templates and Documents” dialogue box, open an existing Open Office document, or open a blank, new document. If you double click the Quickstarter icon, the “Templates and Documents” dialogue box will be opened.

How to Disable the Open Office Quickstarter?

Some computer users have the desire to disable all applications that startup with Windows in order to minimize the amount of time that it takes for their computer to startup from the off state. If you want to simply close the currently loaded instance of the Open Office Quickstarter, right click the Open Office icon on the computer’s system tray and choose the “Exit Quickstarter” menu option form the subsequent dialogue menu. This will not prevent the Quickstarter from loading on the next computer startup. If you want to prevent the application from starting during system restart in the future, then deselect the “Load OpenOffice.org during System Startup” menu option on the dialogue menu.

How Do I Reactivate the Open Office Quickstarter?

If you have disabled the Open Office Quickstarter and want to turn it back on, then open the application and choose the “Writer” menu option. Next, select “Tools,” “Options,” “OpenOffice.org,” and “Memory” from the application file menu. Select the “Load Open Office During System Startup” check box on the subsequent screen and exit the menu. The Quickstarter will be enabled on the next system startup.

Open Office Writer is the word processing application contained in the Open Office software suite. For the casual or first time reader, this is the program which is the equivalent of Microsoft Word or Wordperfect that is bundled with Open Office. Just like the rest of Open Office, Writer is distributed under an open source license permitting it to be used for free at home, work, or in school. At the higher level, it provides the same features that you are used to having with commercially produced word processing programs to include supporting templates, styles, page layout tools, columns, tables, frames and can embed graphics, spreadsheets, and objects. The software program also lets you draw simple designs or shapes with the built-in drawing tools and you can create collections of documents into one master document. Other features include change and revision tracking, PDF export support, styles, and full database integration.

How to Start Open Office Writer?

After you have installed Open Office, there are three different ways or methods that you can use to open the Writer application. These include: from the command line or DOS prompt of your operating system, from a pre-existing document, or from the operating system menu (think icons). The most common way that users start the program is from the system menu, but depending on your operating system, you may prefer one of the other two methods to start the program.

Opening from Existing Documents

When you create a Writer document it is automatically associated with the application by your computer’s operating system. If you have existing Writer docs on your computer, if you double click the file it will automatically start the application. If you are using a Windows computer and have Microsoft Office installed, the .doc and .docx file types will have to be associated with Open Office in order for them to open in Open Office Writer instead of Microsoft Word. An easy way to do this association is to right click a Word document on your computer, then choose “Open With” followed by selecting the “Choose Program” or equivalent menu option where you can select Open Office from the subsequent menu. There will be a checkbox or equivalent selection for you to check to “Always Open” files of this type with your menu selection in order to always open Word files with Open Office.

Opening from the System Menu (Or Start Menu)

The term “System Menu” is used to describe the standard operating system menu for opening programs or files. On a Windows computer it is referred to as the “Start” menu, on OS X the “Applications” menu. Many of the operating systems will also permit program icons to be displayed/installed on the computer’s desktop where you can double click the program icon. Note, on some versions of OS X, you will need to open other Open Office applications from the Writer file menu which is not required on other operating systems.

How to Open Open Office from the Command Line

A third way that you can start Open Office is from the command line of your computer. The command line option of starting Open Office Writer is most commonly used by power computer users who need to conduct a specific task with the application. To open the command line on a Windows computer you will select the “Start” menu and enter command in the “Search Text Field”. Then, to open Writer and create a new document enter “swriter” or “soffice -writer” at the prompt followed by the enter key. Some of the other popular Open Office command line options include the following: “-help” to see a full list of options, “-minimized” open the application in a minimized state, or “-norestore” to supress the restore options after a fatal document error has occurred.

Open Office 3 is an open source office productivity suite of software that has database, presentation, spreadsheet, word processing, and graphics capability and is available in a number of languages. One of the most powerful aspects of the software package is that it works on any operating system that can run Java, and stores all data in ISO (international open standard) format and is compatible with all major Office software suites. The Open Office suite of programs is provided free of charge and has been in continual software development for more than 20 years at the time of this writing.

Open Office Ease of Use

Normally when consumers hear the term “Free” associated with software programs, they think one of two things: 1 – The software is pirated, or 2 – The software is full of spyware. With Open Office, this is not the case. The suite of programs is advertisement and spyware free and is not a pirated version of other software applications. Many users of Open Office have previously used Microsoft or Wordperfect office and find that the Open Office suite is easy to use when familiar with either of those software packages. On top of that, Open Office will let you import and even store in the native file formats of Microsoft Office products without having to muck with rewriting or retyping documents. The Open Office 3 software package is also free of license fees and is released under the LGPL license making it legal to use for home, business, or school purposes.

Maturity of Open Office

Open Office is considered mature software that is continually being revised and updated to keep up with the latest trends and international standards requirements. The life of the software package exceeds 20 years, and is able to be used on GNU/Linux, Sun Solaris, OS X and other Apple Mac versions, and Microsoft Windows. Generally, if you can run Java on the computer, it can run Open Office. For the techno-Geek, since the software package is open source, you can even check out the source programming code if you so desire. Note, most users won’t want to go to this extreme, but unlike proprietary produced software, the opportunity is there.

There’s No Hype

Since the application developers work on Open Office without a business person selling the product, its significantly easier to find out about potential issues with the software (and solutions) through the Open Office Wiki that is posted on the product website. Normally, a software development company’s marketing arm will make it extremely painful to find out real information about a new product, which you just don’t run into with Open Office.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Use Open Office?

That’s a good question. Primarily its due to just not knowing about the software program or capabilities that you get which are equivalent to those you get for shelling out a few hundred bucks for MS Office. Since Open Office does use Java, you will need more than the minimum amount of RAM on your computer for it to run smoothly. If you can watch a movie on your computer though, it will probably perform just fine with Open Office. And guess what? If it doesn’t, since Open Office is free, just remove the software! I shifted to Open Office for my home about 2 years ago (I had used MS Office and Google Docs), and have not looked back.
