Objective-C Language Syntax

Objective-c is a superset of the ANSI C programming language and the Apple produced compiler deployed with the Xcode IDE can compile any program written in strict ANSI C in addition to those written in Objective-C. Differences Between C++ and Objective-C

A common question that arises amongst developers is understanding the differences in how C++ and Objective-C extend ANSI C. Each language takes a different approach to extending ANSI C. Objective-C does not try to add the large number of capabilities to ANSI like C++ does, instead Objective-C only works to extend the language by adding object orientated programming to existing C syntax. Objective-C also adds reflective capabilities at runtime when object instances are queried by messages. C++ on the other hand, can not do the same runtime reflective queries without the use of external libraries. C++ is also more heavily geared to relying on decisions made when programming code is compiled vice the Objective-C methodology of making runtime decisions.

Step 1 – Open the Xcode IDE by selecting the application located in the “Developer/Applications” folder on your MAC. At the time of this writing, the Xcode IDE is not available for use on a computer running the Windows operating system.

Step 3 – Choose the “Window-Based” application menu option and ensure the “iPhone” is selected in the product pop-up menu.

Creating a new document in Open Office Writer is pretty straight forward. The following are the steps to follow to create a new document from the file menu in Writer:

Step 1 – Open the Open Office program interface by double clicking the program icon located on your computer’s desktop or from the system menu.

Step 2 – Single click the “Writer” icon on the subsequent menu listing the various Open Office applications.

Step 3 – Select the “File,” “New,” and “Text Document” menu options from the file menu of the application.

Step 3a – Alternatively, you can choose “File,” “New,” and “XML Document” or “HTML Document” depending on what type of product you need to create.

Creating a New Document from the Command Line in Open Office

Another method that is primarily used by power users is to create new documents through the command line interface of the computer’s operating system. If you need to create a new document using this method conduct the following actions:

Step 1 – Open the command console on your computer. On a Windows computer, select the “Start” menu and enter “command” in the search text field followed by the “Enter” key.

Step 2 – Enter “swriter” or “Soffice -writer” at the command prompt followed by the “Enter” key on your computer.

Step 3 – Add additional command line options to open writer to include “-minimized” to open Writer in a minimized state or “-norestore” to open the application without displaying application restoration options following a failure of the application.

Step 4 – View additional command line configuration options for Writer by entering “swriter -help” followed by the “enter” key on your computer’s console.

The Open Office Quickstarter is loaded in the Windows application tray if you are using a computer running the Windows Operating System. It may or may not be used on your computer’s operating system if you use an alternative OS on your computer. In order to access the Quickstarter menu on a Windows box, you simply right click the Open Office icon in your computers application tray (normally located at the bottom of your computer screen next to the visual computer clock). From the Quickstarter menu, you can then open the “Templates and Documents” dialogue box, open an existing Open Office document, or open a blank, new document. If you double click the Quickstarter icon, the “Templates and Documents” dialogue box will be opened.

How to Disable the Open Office Quickstarter?

Some computer users have the desire to disable all applications that startup with Windows in order to minimize the amount of time that it takes for their computer to startup from the off state. If you want to simply close the currently loaded instance of the Open Office Quickstarter, right click the Open Office icon on the computer’s system tray and choose the “Exit Quickstarter” menu option form the subsequent dialogue menu. This will not prevent the Quickstarter from loading on the next computer startup. If you want to prevent the application from starting during system restart in the future, then deselect the “Load OpenOffice.org during System Startup” menu option on the dialogue menu.

How Do I Reactivate the Open Office Quickstarter?

If you have disabled the Open Office Quickstarter and want to turn it back on, then open the application and choose the “Writer” menu option. Next, select “Tools,” “Options,” “OpenOffice.org,” and “Memory” from the application file menu. Select the “Load Open Office During System Startup” check box on the subsequent screen and exit the menu. The Quickstarter will be enabled on the next system startup.

How to Start Open Office Writer?

After you have installed Open Office, there are three different ways or methods that you can use to open the Writer application. These include: from the command line or DOS prompt of your operating system, from a pre-existing document, or from the operating system menu (think icons). The most common way that users start the program is from the system menu, but depending on your operating system, you may prefer one of the other two methods to start the program.

Opening from Existing Documents

Note, on some versions of OS X, you will need to open other Open Office applications from the Writer file menu which is not required on other operating systems.

A third way that you can start Open Office is from the command line of your computer. Normally when consumers hear the term “Free” associated with software programs, they think one of two things: 1 – The software is pirated, or 2 – The software is full of spyware. With Open Office, this is not the case. The suite of programs is advertisement and spyware free and is not a pirated version of other software applications. Many users of Open Office have previously used Microsoft or Wordperfect office and find that the Open Office suite is easy to use when familiar with either of those software packages. On top of that, Open Office will let you import and even store in the native file formats of Microsoft Office products without having to muck with rewriting or retyping documents. The Open Office 3 software package is also free of license fees and is released under the LGPL license making it legal to use for home, business, or school purposes.

Maturity of Open Office

Open Office is considered mature software that is continually being revised and updated to keep up with the latest trends and international standards requirements. The life of the software package exceeds 20 years, and is able to be used on GNU/Linux, Sun Solaris, OS X and other Apple Mac versions, and Microsoft Windows. Generally, if you can run Java on the computer, it can run Open Office. For the techno-Geek, since the software package is open source, you can even check out the source programming code if you so desire. Note, most users won’t want to go to this extreme, but unlike proprietary produced software, the opportunity is there.

There’s No Hype

Since the application developers work on Open Office without a business person selling the product, its significantly easier to find out about potential issues with the software (and solutions) through the Open Office Wiki that is posted on the product website. Normally, a software development company’s marketing arm will make it extremely painful to find out real information about a new product, which you just don’t run into with Open Office.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Use Open Office?

That’s a good question. Primarily its due to just not knowing about the software program or capabilities that you get which are equivalent to those you get for shelling out a few hundred bucks for MS Office. Since Open Office does use Java, you will need more than the minimum amount of RAM on your computer for it to run smoothly. If you can watch a movie on your computer though, it will probably perform just fine with Open Office. And guess what? If it doesn’t, since Open Office is free, just remove the software! I shifted to Open Office for my home about 2 years ago (I had used MS Office and Google Docs), and have not looked back.
